ALAMEDA, CA (September 15, 2023) — Girl Scouts of Northern California (GSNorCal) is thrilled to announce a transformative $1 million grant from Jack Dorsey's philanthropic initiative, #startsmall. This monumental contribution will significantly enhance GSNorCal's capacity to serve more girls across the region, especially those in communities that have been historically marginalized.
The grant will be directed towards deepening and extending GSNorCal's commitment to ensuring that all girls, especially those from low‐income communities, have equitable opportunities to participate in Girl Scouts and achieve the Girl Scout leadership outcomes.
Girl Scouts of Northern California has been providing girls with premier leadership experiences for over 100 years. In recognition that 52% of girls in California are Latina, one of our goals is to amplify our investment in supportive infrastructure and culturally relevant programming so that Girl Scouts is more reflective of the northern California community we serve. This supports our continuing work to be an anti‐racist organization and to nurture diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging, so that all girls and youth who identify with the girl experience feel like they belong in Girl Scouts and have equitable opportunities to achieve the Girl Scout leadership outcomes.
Bri Seoane, Chief Executive Officer of Girl Scouts of Northern California, expressed her gratitude, stating, "This significant donation from #startsmall is a testament to the shared vision we have for empowering girls and fostering leadership. With these funds, we can expand our efforts to provide this life‐changing leadership experience to more girls and gender‐expansive youth. This grant gives us a boost as we continue out of COVID recovery so we can build capacity and grow programs for Latinas and other diverse communities right away. Kids can't wait.”
