Ways to Volunteer

Whether you can give a few hours, a few weeks, or a few months, volunteering with Girl Scouts is flexible and fun (and we offer all of the training and resources you need to be successful)!

In order to ensure that volunteering with Girl Scouts is safe, supportive, and fun for everyone, all volunteers complete membership registration, a background check, and are covered under GSNorCal insurance.

Start a Troop or Become a Troop Volunteer

Be the troop leader who supports her through her Girl Scout experience—the one that watches her smile get bigger as she grows more confident. Mentor a Girl Scout Cookie Professional during cookie season so she can earn enough to reach the goals she and her troop set. Or work with other adults to provide the kind of behind-the-scenes support that makes it possible for her to make amazing new memories at Girl Scouts.

Troop Leader

Work with other bright, creative people as a team to guide girls in growing life and leadership skills though teamwork and exciting activities. A troop leader coordinates and organizes the meeting activities, communicates with parents and families, and engages girls to create memories that will last a lifetime.

Troops can have multiple troop leaders, typically 2-3, that team up to share responsibility and leadership for the meeting activities.

Assistant Troop Leader

Work alongside your troop leader to coordinate and organize the meeting activities, communicate with parents and families, and engage girls to create memories that will last a lifetime!

Troop Cookie or Fall Product Program Manager

Support your girls as they become clever young entrepreneurs! Coordinate the annual Cookie Program or Fall Product Program at the troop level, set up booth locations, and manage inventory and money. Then watch the girls light up as they enjoy learning about marketing, money management, and business ethics—and get to use their hard earned funds for awesome Girl Scout adventures!

Splitting this role between two or more people can make the job easier—teamwork makes the dream work!

Troop Helper

Support the girls throughout their Girl Scout experience by working with the troop leaders as a team to coordinate troop activities. You'll assist with field trips or driving, chaperoning cookie booths, participating in outdoor adventures, planning meeting activities, lending your unique talents as girls work on badges related to your expertise, or other necessary tasks to keep the troop running oh-so-smoothly from week to week.

Troop Treasurer

The troop treasurer is a vital part of any Girl Scout troop and helps make all the troop's activities possible by managing the troop funds and bank account. Trustworthy and reliable, this volunteer works with the girls and troop leader to help develop a budget, make sure dues and payments are collected at meetings, manages the troop checking account, and shares the troop balance with girls and parents (all the while helping girls to learn important financial literacy and money management skills).

Service Unit Volunteer

A Girl Scout service unit is a community of volunteers and girls in a geographic area. The service unit team is an essential support system that organizes training, mentorship, girl program, and membership support for volunteers, girls, and caregivers.

If you're an experienced volunteer, you can take it to the next level and support your Girl Scout community by getting involved in one of our many service unit roles.

Volunteer with a One-Time Program

Program volunteers play an important role in delivering fun, skill-buidling events for girls throughout Northern California. Find an event that fits your interest and volunteer as little or as much as you like!

Golden Gate Bridging

Provide vital day-of event support for GSNorCal’s largest event as over 7,000 bridge from our younger girl to older girl programs! Volunteers are needed to help with registration, delivering lunch, running activity tables, and more.

Camp Work Parties

Roll up your sleeves and join GSNorCal at one of our camp properties! Spend the day doing trail restoration, painting, or other improvement projects at camp – no special skills required.

Volunteer with a STEM Experience

At GSNorCal, STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) opportunities cover everything from protecting California’s beloved natural resources, to building robots with NASA. Through our diverse STEM programming, girls develop critical leadership and technical skills that not only spark an invested interest in science and technology, but also set them up for a lifetime of success!

Support Our Career Exploration Event

Join GSNorCal at NASA Ames Research Center, as we host “When I Grow Up", a STEM exploration event for girls. Volunteers support this great event by hosting an interactive STEM table, helping with check in, and other day-of event support.

Mentor a Robotics Team

Get hands on with Girl Scouts FIRST Robotics or VEX robotics competition teams, as they work together to build and program their own robots.

Be an After School Program Role Model

Support under-resourced girls in our STEM and environmental science after school series. As a role model, share your passion for STEM through hands-on projects and discussions with girls.

Host a Field Trip or Event at Your Company

Provide an opportunity for girls to learn a technical skill, hear from female professionals about their experiences in a STEM field, and get behind-the-scenes views of unique aspects of your workplace.
